For our 6th Annual Day of Caring, over one hundred community members donned UGN Day of Caring t-shirts and fanned out in teams to work on one of 15 projects throughout the County.
Our Annual UGN Day of Caring celebrates the spirit of volunteerism and service in Jefferson County. Day of Caring brings community members together to honor and celebrate the dedication and commitment of volunteers in our community. It is also the kick-off celebration for the 2016 United Good Neighbors Fall Fund Drive.
Our goal for the Fall Fund Drive is to raise $200,000 to fund local health and human service organizations that deliver vital services in our community. Ken Dane, Interim Executive Directors of United Good Neighbors.
The Day of Caring event kicked off with a gathering at the Cotton Building at 8:30 am on Friday morning. Mayor Deborah Stinson joined us to read the Day of Caring Proclamation.
2016 Good Neighbor Award Winners: Colette Kostelec, Polly Lyle and Bob Ferris (Amanda Milholland, pictured here, accepted the award on behalf of Bob)
Nikki Russell announced the 2016 UGN Good Neighbor Award winners:
- Polly Lyle received 6 nominations for the award, recognizing her exemplary service with the Friends of Port Townsend Library, The Port Townsend Public Library Foundation, Port Townsend Library, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Northwinds Arts Center.
- Colette Kostelec received 2 nominations for her outstanding commitment and service to Pro Bono Lawyers and the Jefferson County Bar Association.
- Bob Ferris received recognition for 13 years of service to the Jefferson County Farmer’s Market.
Day of Caring volunteers work on a variety of projects:
- The Port Townsend Library gardens, the ReCyclery grounds, Nora’s Neighborhood Park at Habitat’s Birkenfeld Community, Kul Kah Han Native Plant Garden, and The Boiler Room garden each got a dose of TLC;
- The Humane Society dog walking trails got some much needed grooming;
- The Tyler Street stairs got a new coat of paint
- Backpack for kids weekend nutrition bags were assembled for local school children, and
- Trails at Fort Worden were assessed for level of difficulty for Disability Awareness Starts Here (DASH).
Students from the Swan School participated again this year, helping to complete projects at The ReCyclery and Nora’s Neighborhood Park. Swan School pre-school students helped to assemble bags of personal care items for COAST Shelter guests. The Swan School also organized an additional beach clean-up project for their students so the entire school could participate in UGN’s Day of Caring
We know that volunteers dedicate time, talent and skills every day of the year. We hope Day of Caring both celebrates and inspires service throughout the year!
